Apple has released its latest MacBook Pro with a few adjustments that some of us weren’t ready to handle. The new MacBook Pro has only two to four (depending on the model) Thunderbolt 3 ports on board. Though they are compatible with USB-C port, in general, it means that most of the users will have to purchase additional adapters to connect their peripherals to the MacBook Pro. And if you are thinking about connecting your iPhone, in this case, you’ll also have to purchase a special lightning cable to make it work.
Because adapters don’t come along with the laptop (only power adapter does), you should purchase them on your own. It’s worth mentioning that if you need more than one, it might cost you quite a lot of money, so make sure to save additional $200 or more, depending on your needs. For this reason, it’s fair to get a single adapter with multiple inputs so you can connect every device at the same time and don’t bother yourself with switching between different adapters.
Which Adapter to Choose for the MacBook Pro Guide
It’s possible that it might take quite some time to find a worthy adapter on the market that’ll suit your needs. Because sometimes the combination of connections on the dock doesn’t do enough, and it’s best to know beforehand which connections you’ll be using the most.
This is why we’ve come up with the useful guide to help you navigate through a myriad of different ports and adapters.
Hopefully for this one you won’t need an adapter, since the shape of both USB-C and Thunderbolt 3 ports are the same, you can easily plug in one of your USB-C’s. But in case you need a USB-C Hub, you can check out options from Belkin, Lenovo, and Elgato, since they produce the best ones.
This connector should be familiar to you because it’s the most commonly used type of USB. Generally speaking, it’s an “original” type of USB that older MacBooks used to have before Apple changed the game here. If you need to connect your iPhone or iPad simultaneously search for Satechi dock or stick with Apple’s $19 single adapter.
3. Micro-B Cable
Startech’s website offers a Micro-B Cable that connects to your USB-C host (or Thunderbolt 3) for $16. You also get a warranty along with this cable, which is a good thing to have just in case.
4. Thunderbolt 1 and 2
This is an easy one, you can go straight to Apple’s website and get yours for around $50. This is a bit high in price, but this adapter is bi-directional which means it can be used in different ways.
To connect this type of port to your MacBook Pro you’ll need a USB-C to DP(or Mini DP) adapter or cable, both available on Amazon for around $20.
There’s a multi-adapter at Apple’s website that hosts one HDMI, one USB-C port type, and one USB-A. However, the latter two are only suitable for charging your devices. This adapter should cost you about $70, and if you don’t want to waste that amount of money if you don’t need additional USB ports, get simple Auckey adapter at Amazon.
Same goes here as with HDMI. Apple also has a multi-adapter for VGA to Thunderbolt 3 with three different connections, namely VGA, USB-C, and USB-A. But this one is also up there in price, it goes for around $80. If you don’t want to spend that much money, go for $13 Fly adapter that’s available on Amazon.
There’s no better option than Belkin adapter for this purpose which is available on Amazon for $35.
9. SD Card
If you need to transfer files from your camera or another device that has the info stored on SD Card – it’s probably best to use SanDisk Reader that you can pick up at Amazon for $32.
This one is a bit tricky. Apple has an adapter for this case, but with an older version of Thunderbolt. What this means, is that your new MacBook Pro would not support this adapter. Which leaves you with an option to buy another adapter that supports Thunderbolt 2 and plug it in. But there’s also a more costly option, you can buy an OWC dock that has multiple connections including Ethernet, USB-C ports, DP port and more. Look it up at Amazon, it should be around $300.
